How vaccines train your body

A rehearsal for your immune system.

Your immune system learns by example. Show it a harmless fragment of a pathogen and it builds antibodies plus memory cells that remember the shape.

If the real pathogen arrives later, the memory cells recognise it in hours instead of days, and the infection is stopped before you feel much.

That is the entire trick: no live danger, all of the rehearsal.
